Damien Butlers practice of art is directed by his interests in the world around us, our perception, connection through movement and personified experiences. Butler’s works include sculpture, objects, photography, film, painting and installations. His practice seeks to expand from the museum and galleries and engages the broader public domain through architectural projects and interventions in urban space. Butler was born in 1984. He grew up in Sydney and studied at the University of Sydney, Sydney College of Arts until 2005. He continued his study becoming a Meisterschüler fur Bildhauerei (Sculpture) at Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste “Stadelschule”. In 2010, he founded Studio Damien Butler, which today unites two countries and numerous technicians, fabricators, architects, programmers, art administrators and an experimental chief. Since the founding of the Studio, Butler has realised numerous major projects internationally. Some of his projects include an installation for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Offices (Prime minister Office in Sydney) and an outdoor installation for the bequest of Dr Henry Schapper, who introduced Agricultural Economics to Western Australias Policymaking. While teaching as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of the Sydney, Butlers Masters research studios under took experiments in the Urban Environments. These projects were often realised in his Studios, a prototyping and tested bed for physical space and environments. In 2011, Butler started Assemblage… Now a social business and now non for profit institute, a model to engourage sustainable cultural production, experimentation and clean futures research in urban environments. Projects that are been worked on currently include the pedagogy of art and the construction of alternative methods of creative practise. Butler lives and works in Australia and Germany.
